A PES file contains stitches, not pixels
Renaming a .jpg file to .pes will not make it sewable. Digitizing translates the shapes in your image into needle movements, thread changes and travel paths. Auto Scope builds that stitch plan automatically, then lets you review its layers before exporting.
How to convert JPG to PES
- Prepare the artwork. Use a clear JPG, PNG or WebP under 3 MB. A simple logo or bold illustration is a useful first project. A transparent PNG can keep an unwanted background out of the design.
- Choose the physical size. In the studio, set a width that fits your hoop. Check the calculated height too. Enlarging a design changes its stitch layout, so decide the sewing size before exporting.
- Generate and inspect. Review the animated stitch sequence, thread layers and Jumps view. Remove an unwanted background layer or adjust colors when needed. Tiny lettering and isolated details may need simpler artwork or a larger design.
- Export PES. Select PES in the download menu. A paid plan is required for machine files; previews do not require an account. The complete ZIP includes the other supported formats and a thread worksheet.
- Open and test-sew. Check the file in your machine software and sew on scrap material with the stabilizer you intend to use.
Check your machine before downloading
The exporter writes PES v6. PES is used in many Brother and Baby Lock workflows, but compatibility depends on the exact model, file version, hoop and stitch-count limits. Check your manual. If your model needs another format, the studio also exports DST, JEF, EXP, VP3, XXX and PEC.
If your embroidery machine cannot see the PES file
A successful download does not confirm that a particular machine can read the design. Check these items before changing the artwork or buying another converter:
- Extract the download. Transfer the individual .pes machine file rather than the complete ZIP, the source JPG or the PDF worksheet.
- Check the PES version and design dimensions. AutoScope exports PES v6. Confirm that your model accepts that version and that both the width and height fit its supported sewing field. A file can be small in megabytes and still exceed the machine’s embroidery area.
- Check the stitch and color limits. A design may fit the hoop yet exceed a model’s supported stitch count or color changes. Reduce unnecessary detail or colors and inspect the regenerated preview.
- Follow the machine’s transfer instructions. Use its supported USB media, folder location and filename rules. These vary by model; a different extension or a renamed JPG cannot repair an incompatible design.
Brother’s official format and transfer precautions explain several of these checks for the models listed there. Use the manual for your exact model rather than applying another machine’s hoop limit.
JPG to PES questions before you export
Does JPEG to PES mean the same thing as JPG to PES?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are filename extensions for the same image format. Upload the image itself; the studio creates a new stitch plan rather than merely changing the filename.
Can I convert an existing PES file back to editable image objects?
This converter accepts JPG, PNG and WebP images. It does not import an existing PES file for object-based editing or recover the original artwork from stitch data. For another machine workflow, compare the supported export formats before starting.
What if small lettering or a complex logo does not look right?
Inspect the actual stitch preview at the intended sewing size. Use clearer artwork, simplify fine details or increase the physical size within your hoop. If the design needs precise manual lettering or specialist embroidery techniques, automatic digitizing may not be suitable. The artwork preparation guide explains the input limits; the stitch guide explains spacing and jumps.
What is free?
Uploading, generating previews and inspecting the stitch plan are free. Machine-file downloads require a paid plan. Starter includes 30 design exports for $3.99 per month, Maker includes 80 for $4.99 and Studio includes unlimited monthly exports for $9.99. Card purchases cover one month without automatic renewal; PayPal subscriptions renew monthly until cancelled.
Automatic digitizing does not predict fabric movement or machine tension. Test-sew before making a final garment or customer order.
