Embroidery software for beginners: choose an editor or digitizer

Choose embroidery software by the job you need it to do: edit an existing stitch file, digitize artwork, or preview and export a new design online.

Updated 2026-10-04 · Auto Scope Embroidery documentation

Start with your input file

If you have a PES or DST design already, look for an embroidery editor that supports your format and the edits you need. If you have a photo, logo or illustration, you need digitizing. File-format conversion and image digitizing solve different problems; check both input and output support before choosing software.

SewWhat-Pro and SewArt do different jobs

S&S Computing describes SewWhat-Pro as an editor for viewing, editing and converting embroidery files. It identifies SewArt as its image-digitizing product. Someone wanting to arrange existing designs may need an editor, while someone starting from a JPG needs a digitizer. Read the vendor's current feature list and trial conditions.

A manual digitizing route

Ink/Stitch is a free, open-source embroidery platform based on Inkscape. It is worth investigating if you want to work with vector shapes and learn embroidery parameters. This approach involves learning the software and making digitizing decisions yourself. Consult its documentation to assess whether that workflow fits your time and design needs.

An automatic online route

Auto Scope accepts PNG, JPG and WebP artwork and generates a stitch plan in the browser. You can preview without an account, inspect sewing order, recolor or remove layers and adjust design size. Paid export includes PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3, XXX and PEC. It does not import existing machine files as an embroidery editor or export proprietary EMB and PXF authoring files.

Windows, Mac and browser workflows

Check operating-system requirements before buying a desktop application. S&S identifies its products as native Windows applications and describes an emulator-based Mac workflow. Browser-based software avoids that particular installation step, but internet access, browser capability and device performance still affect the experience. Try your actual artwork on the device you plan to use.

Compare the full cost and useful features

List the features you need, the file versions your machine accepts, installation requirements and whether payment is a license or recurring plan. Auto Scope previews are free; exports start with 30 designs per month for $3.99. Test a representative design and examine a sewn sample before deciding. A low price alone does not establish suitability for your fabric or production work.
