Hand embroidery and machine embroidery

Hand embroidery uses a needle guided by your hands. Machine embroidery uses a digital design to control needle movements. Auto Scope prepares files for machine embroidery; it does not provide counted hand-stitch charts. For a first machine project, choose a simple shape with a few colors rather than a detailed portrait.

What you need before starting

Prepare your embroidery machine, a compatible hoop, suitable fabric, stabilizer, embroidery thread and a needle recommended for that material. Keep the machine manual nearby. Your hoop dimensions and supported file version matter as much as the brand name. Start on spare fabric instead of a finished garment.

Why an image needs digitizing

A PNG or JPG records pixels, not stitches. Digitizing decides how those shapes become thread: which areas sew first, which direction the fill runs and how separate objects connect. Renaming a JPG to PES does not perform that work. An automatic tool generates a starting stitch plan that you must review.

A practical first exercise

Upload a clear illustration to the studio, set a size comfortably inside your hoop and choose a small palette. Generate the free preview, play the sewing order and inspect the jumps. Remove an unwanted background layer and check that important parts remain. Export the format specified by your machine manual when the preview is useful.

Hooping and your first test

Use the stabilizer and hooping method recommended for your fabric and machine. Keep the material secure without stretching it out of shape. Transfer the design through the machine's normal workflow, check the displayed dimensions and follow the manual's positioning checks. Sew a test and watch for thread breaks, gaps and puckering.

Learn from the result

A screen preview cannot reproduce fabric movement or tension. If the test puckers, review stabilizer, hooping and density together. If details disappear, simplify the artwork or increase the design size within the hoop. Record the settings and material used so your next test changes one variable at a time.
